Across the world, Android operating system has reached 900 million devices activation as of 2013. Now, it is considered as the world's most powerful mobile platform because of its fast growth. Android OS caught the taste of mobile phone users since they started. Behind of this success, Android has its tasty and sweet origin.

Android OS is designed for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It is based on Linux operating system and initially developed by Android. Inc. Also, it is financially backed up by Google and bought it in 2005, and later unveiled along with the founding of Open Handset Alliance in 2007.

By the way, Android Inc. was founded by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White in 2003. Rubin said in his interview with BusinessWeek, that there was tremendous potential in developing smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences. "If people are smart, that information starts getting aggregated into consumer products." said Rubin.

Before they took smartphones, their first intention is to develop an advanced operating system just for digital cameras but when they realized that the market of that device was not large, they changed and diverted their efforts in developing a smartphone operating system. It is in rival to Symbian and Windows Mobile.

Google bought Android

In 2005, Google backed up Android with financial and development in producing smartphone operating system. Many assumed that it was a way of Google to enter the mobile phone market.

Afterwards, Android released its first own powered phone in October 2008 which is HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1). This phone includes features, technical supports, applications designed by Android like what we have seen to mobile phones today.

Features, Interface and Applications

Indeed, the touch inputs like swiping, tapping, pinching and reverse pinching is the user interface of Android devices. It is based on direct manipulation, that is, it is to directly manipulate objects presented to user, and to complete tasks in less time.

Android devices also consist of three internal hardware which help the device use some applications smoothly and responsively. These are accelerometers, gyroscopes and proximity sensors.

Additionally, Android devices has a home screen similarly to desktop found in PCs. Home screens is made up of application icons and widgets, such as weather forecasts, e-mail box and news ticker. It is also customisable, made up of several pages that can easily swipe and adjust by the user. Android phone is really a user-friendly phone. It also has a status bar on the top.

Features of an Android devices like camera pixels, connectivity, motion, built-in social and games hub are depending on manufacturers. Aside from features, applications is also one of the considerations of mobile consumers. 


As of 2012, Android exceeds 700,000 available application. And also, there are estimated 25 billion applications downloaded from Goggle Play which is the primary app store of Android. Thus, Android considered as the most popular platform for developers, that is according to developer survey findings (Developer Economics Q3 2013).

Notably, the number of applications is based of what version of Android you are using. Those versions are namely in alphabetical arrangement. Also, Android named these versions in a sweet and tasty desserts.

These versions has been developed with a sweet codename namely Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.0–2.1), Froyo (2.2–2.2.3), Gingerbread (2.3–2.3.7), Honeycomb (3.0–3.2.6), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0–4.0.4), Jelly Bean (4.1–4.3).

On the other hand, smartphone users still looking for future innovation of Android. Some says about self charging device because it is a common problem with smartphones especially when you are an internet active, music listener or video watcher.

Android is really giving and creating a new world of technology, that is, in developing more applications that will serve our life easier and more convenient.
